What’s in my doula bag ????????????

Over the years I have gathered lots of helpful goodies to bring into and help with the birthing processes … Every birth experience I have been part of has never been the same , So with every birth comes something new that I learn and can then add to my bag of tricks .

ImageMY DOULA BAG –

Battery operated, flame free candles -Nothing creates a soothing atmosphere like candle light , unfortunately you can’t bring anything flammable into a hospital . These candles are a must to create a good relaxing vibe !!!

Sent ball aromatherapy diffuser – I don’t know about you but I find the hospital to be such a blah and stale  environment , just by adding some yummy smelling oils will help shift the whole feeling in the room . I tend to use oils of clary sage and lavender mixed together. As the birth progresses I switch to a blend of oils of ylang ylang and sweet orange . All these oils help with the birthing process .

Spectrum organic unscented coconut oil – I use this to massage my clients back , head, legs and feet . I melt the oil to a liquid and add a mix oils of eucalyptus , clary sage and lavender . I use another blend of lavender and sandalwood on the head to help relax and calm the mind.

Peppermint oil – If my client starts to get tired I dab a drop on each temple , it’s an instant pick me up.

Rescue remedy – A Bach flower remedy that helps ease the nerves and calms you down . Believe it or not, I bring for my pregnant clients but end up giving it to others in the room instead most of the time. I also have in my bag , just in case .. the Bach remedies of Olive ( helps restore energy when you are physically and mentally exhausted ) , Cherry plum ( helps you act rationally and think clearly when you fear loosing control ) and White chestnut ( encourages a peaceful and calm mind when thoughts and worries go round and round in your head )

Valerian root, Rescue remedy and Calm the powdered drink – For anyone who is in the room that is feeling worried or stressed ( partner , friends , parents and in laws – this is a big hit – I dish it out like candy 🙂 ) Remember … the calmer everyone is in the room the calmer the laboring mother will be.

Sleep mask – It’s important to sleep and rest up for pushing , this helps darken the room to promote sleep.

Ear plugs – Blocks out noise and again helps with a deeper sleep.

Arnica 30x – I feed it to my client during labor and after to help with the healing.

Ginger brew or , ginger tea or ginger root–  Helps to ease nausea.

Nux vomica – Homeopathic remedy to help with nausea.

Red raspberry leaf tea – Helps tone and strengthen the uterus and helps with pain

Camomile tea – To help relax

Honey – For the tea and also for an energy boost

Lollipops – for a little extra energy and to get salvia in mouth

Dr schultze’s super food bars , almonds , dried fruit , water , coconut water  – To munch on and drink –

I pad – Full of healing music that relaxes and calms the body, mind and spirit

Mason Pearson hair brush – To scratch with if someone gets an epidural you tend to get itchy, this works wonders.

Ice bag – I place on forehead to help cool off .

Smith’s minted rose lip balm – So yummy and keeps lips from getting dry

Mints – to freshen up the breath

Jurlique rose water face mist – soothing and refreshing

Paper or battery operated fan – Pregnant woman especially in birth tend to be hot

I would love to hear if anyone has anything else I could add to my bag of tricks !! Always looking for new goodies to add to the mix .. Thanks xoxoxxo Lori B

I read recently to have a paint roller to help with counter back pain. Might be kind of bulky but I think the idea is a good one.

Sleep masks do help in getting a better quality of sleep to prevent those annoying bright lights. ..

A battery operated fan (the misting ones) was recommended to me by a sister doula, client and friend. I think it is a great addition to all of these awesome ideas you have.

Another tip that helps when trying to find a sleep mask is that you want a mask that has a mid to high level of light blocking. Look for a layer of what is know as blackout material. It ought to be sewn into the mask. And, look for the contour of the mask. Check the mask for high quality padding that should be around the entire mask. Masks differ in their contour and just how much of the mask covers the eyes and component of the face. Still yet another important feature to look for is the weight of the mask. Some masks are heavier than others as a result of the type of material that is used. Additional padding will make the mask a bit heavier however it will work much better to keep the light out.”

Just found your wonderful site and digesting all your tips and tricks. Do you have a suggested playlist of songs that you use during labor?
